The River That Remembered
The River That Remembered
Long ago, in a small riverside village called Sonargram, lived a boy named Shuvo. He was born in a fisherman’s family but always dreamed beyond the wide river’s horizon. Every evening, when his father returned with nets full of fish, Shuvo sat by the riverbank, whispering his secrets to the flowing water.
One day, when Shuvo was fifteen, a terrible flood hit Sonargram. The river that once listened to his dreams now roared like a monster, swallowing homes and fields. Shuvo’s father drowned trying to save their boat. That night, under the angry sky, Shuvo promised himself he would not let the river win.
Years passed. Shuvo studied hard, worked in the city, and returned to his village every year to build stronger embankments. Villagers mocked him at first—who was he to challenge the mighty river? But Shuvo did not care. He believed the river was not his enemy; it only needed respect and understanding.
At thirty, Shuvo became a civil engineer. He designed a smart flood control system for Sonargram. With new canals, floodgates, and tree planting along the banks, the river calmed down year after year. During the next big monsoon, when other villages drowned again, Sonargram stood safe like an island of hope.
One quiet dawn, Shuvo sat on the same old riverbank, now grown with trees and flowers. He dipped his fingers in the gentle water and whispered, “You remember everything, don’t you? All my fears… all my dreams…” The river flowed softly around his hand, as if blessing him back.
Children ran up to him, calling, “Uncle Shuvo! Tell us the river story again!” And he smiled, knowing that someday, when he would no longer be there, the river and its story would live on in those young hearts.
